Marina Bay Light Festival

Expression of interest

Marina Bay Light Festival will be held from 15 October till 7 November 2010 in Singapore’s Marina Bay precinct.

The Light Festival will be a free family friendly outdoor celebration, consisting of 20 low- energy light art installations by international, regional and local design luminaries and will include the lighting of Marina Bay’s iconic buildings and landmarks. Adding to the experience will be a series of educational and fun activities for the public as well as industry events for the professional community.

The Light Festival aims to create Asia’s first low energy light festival that engages public and professional interest and visually enhances the night environment around Marina Bay.

The objectives for the Light Festival are:

  1. to raise awareness in energy usage produced by artificial lighting;
  2. to create a light festival which encourages public participation
  3. to create opportunities for professional engagement in best practices in lighting design; and
  4. to promote dark city skies.

The Marina Bay Light Festival is seeking local artists to participate in the Festival along side invited light artists from Australia and Europe. The theme for the Light Festival is “People, Place, Time“. The Festival provides the opportunity for artists to interpret the creative nature of light in our lives, where we live and the impact it has on us now or in the past or in the future.

Cities and places are not only defined by their architecture but also by atmospheres that leads to creating memorable experiences for its inhabitants

Festival Director Mary-Anne Kyriakou.

“I would recommend that the light artist consider their work and its treatment, the focus may be using one of the following:

  1. Architectural Treatments – façade and building treatments where the architecture and associated landscape elements are central to creating the works
  2. Theatre and Performance – design using a black box approach i.e. lighting is added to create the scene.
  3. Sculptural Light Art Works – primarily sculptural art works with light as the primary medium”
Kyriakou.
